Holidays in Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote
There are many good reasons for opting for a holiday in Puerto del Carmen on the Canary Island of Lanzarote this year. Over 16 million in fact – as that´s the amount of money that has recently been spent by local authorities on improving this popular resort. Which is the oldest and the largest on Lanzarote.
Like the rest of Lanzarote Puerto del Carmen was totally undeveloped as recently as fifty years ago. And was even known by another name – La Tiñosa, which is still used regularly by locals. The village here was dependent on fishing and tourism was pretty much unknown until the 1960´s. When the first intrepid visitors started to arrive from Europe.
Today that trickle has become a flood – as the island is a very popular holiday hot spot, with around 1.4 million foreign visitors arriving on flights to Lanzarote every year. With the majority of them heading for a break in Puerto del Carmen.
As a result accommodation in the resort is also in high demand – with apartments and villas in Puerto del Carmen proving popular with tourists who like to book their own self catering accommodation online. Whilst for those who prefer to let someone else do the cooking there are also plenty of good quality hotels in Puerto del Carmen for visitors to choose from.
Wherever people decided to stay they will find that the resort has recently enjoyed something of rejuvenation. The main seafront promenade has been part pedestrianised to make strolling along by the beaches much more pleasant for tourists. The old town harbour is in the process of being transformed into a marina. Whilst on the edge of town a new 18 golf course has opened. This adds to Puerto del Carmen attractions – which already include great beaches, a casino and the largest zoo on the island at Rancho Texas. Which is an ideal destination for kids.
Puerto del Carmen is also ideally situated for anyone keen to explore Lanzarote. The airport is just a short ten minute drive away – whilst key attractions such as the Timanafaya National Park are a little further. Around fifteen minutes by car. Making this the ideal base for anyone who wants to see the island.
Another great option is to view Lanzarote from a different perceptive altogether and head out on a boat tour which departs from the Old Town harbour area in the centre of the resort.
